CRF Competitive Masters

CRF offers a nationally ranked, nationally competitive team with some of the best coaching in the Midwest.

The competitive teams consist of men and women ranging from 22 years to over 60 years of age with rowing experience spanning a couple years to decades. The competitive teams are a blend of experienced former collegiate rowers and seasoned competitive rowers looking to continue to improve their rowing experience and be a part of a hardworking, dedicated, and committed team. Competitive masters rowers are accepted to the team at the start of each season subject to coach approval.

The on water competitive season begins mid-April through October and indoor winter training is offered (Jan - April) for adult rowers. The summer season (April - August) focuses on sprint races all around the nation, including USRowing Masters Nationals in August. We then transition to the fall season head races (Aug- Oct) culminating with the Head of the Charles and/or Head of the Hooch regatta.

Practices for the competitive masters’ teams are geared to train athletes to get faster, stronger, and ready to participate in competitive regional and national masters’ regattas. We train primarily in 8+'s, 4+'s and sculling boats. And, we have access to state-of-the-art indoor tanks and rowing machines for our team's use.

Fees include 3 training sessions per week plus entrance fee and equipment for one race per CRF sanctioned regatta.* See list of included regattas for the current season below. Additional regattas may be added to the program at the coach’s discretion for an additional fee.

CRF offers a variety of year-round programs like Learn-to-Row, Drop-in Sessions, and Recreational Teams. Please visit those pages to find the right program for you. If you have further questions about the competitive masters women’s team contact us at crf.mwn@gmail.com. For all other inquiries, please contact us at info@rowchicago.com.

*All efforts will be made to seat each rower in one race per regatta per season. Should unforeseen events such as regatta lotteries, regatta cancellations or rowers’ change of plans result in a greater number of rowers than available race seats, the coaches may need to limit the number of rowers at any given regatta.

CRF Intermediate and Recreational Masters

CRF Intermediate and Recreational Masters

The recreational masters team is for rowers 18 years and older who are interested in rowing but do not want to compete. The intermediate team is for rowers 18 years and older who wish to compete for a spot in a boat to race at  two races annually (The Chicago Sprints during the summer and Rowtoberfest during the fall). Both teams practice three times a week.

New rowers are welcome to join the recreational masters team at the beginning of each season. In order to start during an on-water season (Spring & Fall), participants must have completed at least one of the following:

  • Winter season with the Rec team
  • One learn to row session (5-6 on water practices) with Chicago Rowing Foundation
  • One on-water season at another club

If you have questions about joining either team, please contact us at info@rowchicago.com.
